A Dream Turned Reality.
We have always loved boats and being on the water. For years, we enjoyed our 26-foot speedboat on Colorado lakes and a yearly week-long houseboat trip to Lake Powell. It was a way for our family to escape and the water is our “happy place”. There’s just something about slowly and quietly making your way to a destination unknown.
Our lives were full to the brim with being the parents of 5 growing children, running a business and Dave working as an airline pilot. We live an active lifestyle and wanted a lot more than simply maintaining our current suburban living arrangements after the kids were grown. We have been skiers and hikers in the Colorado Mountains and started to lose the love for the cold. in 2022 we discovered scuba diving, which has taken us to beautiful places all over the world and we feel very much at home in the water.
One evening during Covid we were flipping through YouTube for some new entertainment. A young couple on a sailboat appeared on our screen and we clicked. The happy couple was making their way through unknown islands in the pacific with all of their possessions and not a worry in the world (aside from the weather). Dave said;
“I want to do THAT.”
Done. That’s when the planning started. All five children were living in the house and we had four years until our youngest graduated high school and our twin daughters graduated College. There were a lot of things to prepare for… mentally, emotionally, logistically and financially. We didn’t know a single thing about boat life. So we dug our heals in and learned. We attended courses; chartered boats; looked at hundreds, if not thousands of boats online; we went to numerous boat shows searching for the “right” boat. We had finally narrowed it down and said it out loud.
“We want a Nordhavn, an ocean crossing vessel. ”
Fast forward 4 years. We are pretty sure our children, family and friends all think we’re a little crazy, but we don’t want a conventional life. We are removing the boundaries. Now its time to start making new memories and taking new risks.
